Anbernic RG DS: The K-TEC Edition

This is not the raw device you get from a generic importer. It is a fully configured, dual-screen retro gaming handheld — purpose-built for Nintendo DS, with 39 gaming platforms in total, ready to play.

The Anbernic RG DS is a clamshell handheld with two 4.0-inch IPS displays. That dual-screen design exists for one reason: Nintendo DS. The touch screen, the clamshell form factor, the two displays — this hardware was made to play NDS games the way they were meant to be played. And with K-TEC’s expert configuration, it does exactly that.

But the device you see here is not the one that shipped from the factory. This one has been transformed.

The Transformation: GammaOS Next

When the RG DS first launched, reviewers found that the stock software let the hardware down. NDS games didn’t display properly. The experience fell short of what this dual-screen design deserved.

Then the community stepped in. GammaOS Next — a custom-built operating system by TheGammaSqueeze — fundamentally changed what this device could do. As Retro Game Corps put it: “Custom Firmware Saved the Anbernic RG DS.” Joey’s Retro Handhelds went further: “GammaOS Next on the Anbernic RG DS is a must have.”

I install GammaOS Next on every K-TEC RG DS. Not just install it — refine it. The firmware transforms the device, and then I spend hours pushing it further: tuning every emulator, configuring every display setting, and testing every platform until the whole thing works the way it should.

  • I: Replaced the stock operating system with GammaOS Next — the custom firmware that reviewers credit with saving this device.
  • You get: A dual-screen handheld that plays NDS games beautifully on both screens, with touch support, correct aspect ratios, and none of the display issues that plagued the stock firmware.

The Detail: 39 Platforms of Per-Game Tuning

GammaOS Next gives the RG DS a solid foundation. What I do on top of that is what makes this a K-TEC device.

39 Platforms, Each One Tested

I have configured and verified 39 gaming systems on this device — every one tested and working. From NDS and PS1 to Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, and Amiga. Each platform has its own emulator selection, display settings, and control mappings, chosen and tuned for the RG DS’s RK3568 processor.

Per-Game Configuration

This is where the real invisible work lives — and no other reseller does this.

  • I: Created individual controller configurations for hundreds of ZX Spectrum games — because on a stock system, most Spectrum games simply don’t respond to a gamepad. I mapped the keyboard controls for each game individually so you can pick up and play. Added 35 per-game Vectrex screen overlays that recreate the original plastic overlays shipped with the real cartridges. Configured per-game Amstrad CPC keyboard mappings, Dreamcast PAL optimization for smoother performance, and per-game 3DO overrides for demanding titles.
  • You get: Games that work the moment you select them — correct controls, correct display, no troubleshooting needed.

The Display: Dual-Screen Done Right

The RG DS has two 4.0-inch IPS displays. Here is how I have set them up:

Nintendo DS

NDS games use both screens simultaneously, just like the original hardware. The screens support touch input — essential for the games that depend on it. DraStic, the NDS emulator, is automatically configured to span both displays. No setup, no configuration. Open a game and both screens light up.

Every Other Platform

For non-NDS gaming, the top screen displays your game at full size while the bottom screen shows the Daijishou games library — complete with box art and descriptions. Pick a game from the bottom screen with touch, and it launches on the top screen.

True Multi-Tasking

Because the RG DS runs Android, you can run two apps at once. Follow a walkthrough or look up tips in the browser on the bottom screen while playing a game on the top screen. Works best with 2D games — the RK3568 processor handles this comfortably for less demanding titles.

The Controls: Hall Effect Sticks and Touch

The RG DS features Hall Effect analogue sticks — the same technology used in premium controllers. Hall Effect sticks use magnets instead of physical contacts, which means no drift over time.

The touch screen is capacitive and responsive — essential for NDS games that use stylus input. Your fingers work fine; no stylus needed (though the device supports one if you prefer).

Shoulder buttons (L1/R1/L2/R2) sit on the rear of the device, and the d-pad and face buttons have a crisp, precise feel with no false diagonal inputs.

Quality-of-Life Features

  • I: Enabled automatic save states — the game saves your progress when you exit and loads it when you return. Configured fast-forward for grinding through levels. Enabled rewind so you can undo a mistake. Applied a Sharp Shimmerless shader across all platforms for clean pixel rendering without the shimmering that plagues unconfigured displays.
  • You get: A device that respects your time. Pick up where you left off. Fast-forward through the bits you have played before. Rewind that unfair death. All configured and ready.

Hardware & Feel

The RG DS closes with a satisfying snap. It was the first thing I noticed when I picked one up — it feels quality in a way that surprises at this price. Fold it shut and both screens are protected. Slide it into your pocket and there is nothing to catch — no thumbsticks poking out, no buttons snagging. It is a device designed to go somewhere with you.

  • Processor: Powered by the RockChip RK3568 — a quad-core Cortex-A55 chip that handles 8-bit, 16-bit, NDS, N64, PS1, and PSP gaming.
  • Battery: A 4000 mAh battery provides up to 6 hours of gameplay on a single charge — and GammaOS’s Power Saving mode extends that further for 2D games.
  • Storage: GammaOS Next lives on the device’s 32GB internal storage. Your games live on a separate Kioxia MicroSD card (64GB or 128GB) — safe and independently backed by my Lifetime SD Card Guarantee.
  • Connectivity: WiFi 5 (for browsing while you play), Bluetooth 4.2 (wireless headphones), USB-C, 3.5mm headphone jack, stereo speakers.

Supported Systems

Your K-TEC Edition RG DS comes pre-configured to support 39 gaming systems, including:

  • Nintendo DS: The reason this device exists. Dual-screen, touch-enabled, beautifully configured.
  • Home Consoles: PlayStation 1, N64, SNES, SEGA Mega Drive, NES, Master System, SEGA CD, SEGA 32X, Atari 2600, Atari 7800, TurboGrafx-16, TurboGrafx-CD, 3DO, Vectrex.
  • Handhelds: Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Color, Game Boy, Atari Lynx, Game & Watch.
  • Computers: Amiga, Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, MSX.
  • Arcade: Classic arcade titles with per-platform optimization.
  • Also: Dreamcast, PSP, PICO-8, Cave Story, Virtual Boy, and more.

An Honest Note: This device was built for Nintendo DS. It also handles 8-bit, 16-bit, N64, PS1, Dreamcast, and PSP beautifully. It is not capable of 3DS, PS2, GameCube, Wii, or above. There is no video out. I am honest about what this device can and cannot do, because I would rather you knew before you bought.

The K-TEC Guarantee

Why is this worth the investment?

Buy the RG DS from Amazon or eBay and you get the factory device — the same one reviewers found wanting. No custom firmware. No per-platform tuning. No guarantee on the storage.

Every RG DS from K-TEC ships with a Kioxia (Toshiba) MicroSD card. I am so confident in these components that I offer a Lifetime Guarantee on the storage card. If it fails, I replace it.

Ready to play, right out of the box. No setup. No frustration. Just gaming.

Free UK delivery via Royal Mail Tracked 48 (2–3 working days). 1-year warranty on every device. UK-based support if you ever need help.

Find Your Perfect Fit

Nintendo DS is what this device was made for. Here is how it fits alongside K-TEC’s other devices:

If Nintendo DS is your main interest: You are in the right place. The RG DS is the only dual-screen, clamshell retro handheld I sell — purpose-built for NDS.

If NDS is not your main interest: Consider the Anbernic RG353V or Anbernic RG353M — same price range, more general-purpose, with features like video out and dual-boot.

If you want more power: The Retroid Pocket 3+ handles everything the RG DS does and goes further, including capable 3DS emulation on its widescreen display (single screen, but both DS screens displayed side by side).

If it is specifically 3DS you are after: The RG DS does not target 3DS. For proper dual-screen 3DS emulation, you would be looking at premium devices like the AYN Thor — priced from around £442.95 at DroiX. A different category entirely.
