Both K-TEC and Retrolize are UK-based businesses selling retro gaming handhelds. Both describe their devices as ready to play. So what’s actually different?

This page lays out a straight, side-by-side comparison — firmware, optimization, storage guarantees, pricing, and support — so you can decide which is right for you.

I’m Michael, the person behind K-TEC. I’ve done my best to represent Retrolize accurately based on their publicly available website as of June 2026. If anything here is out of date, let me know and I’ll update it promptly.

TL;DR

Retrolize is a Kent-based team offering a broad retro gaming ecosystem — emulation handhelds, restored original consoles (Game Boys, N64s, SNES), parts, mods, and repair services. Their handhelds ship with the stock manufacturer firmware. A configuration service is available as a paid add-on on select devices.

K-TEC is a one-man specialist focused exclusively on pre-optimized retro handhelds. Every device gets custom firmware (ArkOS, GammaOS, or dArkOS), per-platform emulator tuning, branded SD cards, and a Lifetime SD Card Guarantee.

Choose Retrolize if you want restored original hardware, mod kits, or console repairs. Choose K-TEC if you want the deepest possible optimization on a retro emulation handheld, backed by a lifetime storage guarantee.

Firmware & Optimization

This is the most significant difference between the two. Here’s what it means in practice.

K-TEC

Every K-TEC device has its factory operating system replaced with the best community-vetted custom firmware for that specific hardware:

  • ArkOS — Linux-based, for Rockchip devices (e.g. Anbernic RG353M, RG353V)
  • GammaOS — Android-based, for devices like the Anbernic RG353M, RG353V, RG405M, RG DS
  • dArkOS — Debian-based successor to ArkOS for newer hardware (e.g. BATLEXP G350)

This isn’t cosmetic. Custom firmware changes the entire emulation experience — better performance, more configuration options, and a better interface than the stock operating system.

On select dual-boot devices (e.g. the Anbernic RG353M and RG353V), K-TEC installs custom firmware on both operating systems — ArkOS for the Linux side and GammaOS for the Android side. These devices are dual-boot by design regardless of where you buy them, but K-TEC is the only UK seller that replaces the factory firmware on both systems.

Retrolize

Retrolize’s Anbernic handhelds ship running the stock manufacturer firmware — the default operating system, which includes the EmulationStation frontend and RetroArch.

For their Retroid Pocket Classic, Retrolize offers a paid configuration service as an add-on at checkout. This includes firmware updates, RetroArch setup with cores and custom controller mapping, individual emulator installation and tuning, and the Daijishou frontend. It’s a genuine step up from stock — but it’s a paid extra, and it’s limited to specific devices.

A separate Configuration Service for £43.99 is listed for Retroid Pocket 4/4Pro/5/Flip 2/Classic, but is described as available “ONLY FOR RETROLIZE EBAY CUSTOMERS” — not for customers buying through retrolize.co.uk.

SD Cards & Storage Guarantee

SD card failure is the single most common hardware issue with retro handhelds — and it doesn’t just stop the device working. It can erase hundreds of hours of saved game progress.

K-TEC is the only UK retro handheld seller that offers a Lifetime SD Card Guarantee. If the branded SD card in your K-TEC device fails at any point during the functional lifetime of the device, I replace it or restore it — free of charge. Full guarantee terms.

Retrolize does upgrade to SanDisk SD cards on some models and offers larger SanDisk cards as paid add-ons. However, no specific SD card guarantee is mentioned on their website beyond their standard 12-month warranty.

Product Range

The two businesses have fundamentally different scopes:

Retrolize’s range (much broader)

  • Emulation handhelds (Anbernic, Retroid, Mangmi, R36S)
  • Restored original consoles — Game Boy DMG-01, Game Boy Color, N64, etc.
  • Mod kits and parts — IPS screen kits (solder-free), replacement shells, buttons, silicone pads
  • Repair services — console diagnosis and repair
  • Accessories — 8BitDo controllers, BlueRetro Bluetooth receivers, HDMI adapters, SCART cables
  • Gift cards

K-TEC’s range (specialist focus)

If you want a restored Game Boy with an IPS screen, or you need someone to repair your childhood N64, Retrolize is the right choice. That’s their world, and they do it well.

If you want a retro emulation handheld that’s been optimized as deeply as possible — custom firmware, per-platform tuning, and a lifetime storage guarantee — that’s what K-TEC does exclusively.
