Why Game Gear is easy to emulate — and why that is not the story

The Game Gear shares the Master System’s architecture — the same Z80 processor and a closely related display chip — so everything I said about the Master System applies here: this is 8-bit-era work, and it barely registers on any chip in the range. You cannot buy a device I sell that runs the Game Gear badly, and you cannot pay extra for one that runs it better. So, as with every 8-bit platform in this series, the decision is not about power. It is about the screen, the shape, and what you want the device to do beyond Sega’s handheld.

The 10:9 screen question

The Game Gear drew its picture at 160×144 — a near-square 10:9 frame. That is narrower than the 4:3 shape of a period television, and no panel in the range fills it edge to edge. On the 4:3 screens — the 640×480 panels on the G350, the RG353V, the RG353M, the RG405M and the RG DS — the picture scales to fill the panel’s height with slim black bars at either side. It is the mirror image of the Game Boy Advance, whose 3:2 frame is wider than 4:3 and letterboxes top and bottom instead. The bars are slim, the artwork is crisp, and on the sharp 228 PPI panels the near-square picture looks properly at home — but the Master System remains the only platform in this series that fills a 4:3 screen mathematically exactly.

On the 16:9 widescreen panels, the Game Gear pillarboxes hardest of all: a near-square picture inside a wide frame leaves the biggest black borders in the series, for the same reason and more so than on the Mega Drive. The widescreen devices were the right answer for the PSP; for a 10:9 handheld they are the wrong one.

A library built for a handheld

The Game Gear is one of the platforms in this series whose games were built for a handheld in the first place — designed to be played held, in short sessions, away from a television. Sega launched it in Japan in 1990 — five years after the Master System — and it reached the UK in 1991. Its pitch was the one the market spent the next decade arguing about: a colour, backlit screen in your hands, at a time when the dominant handheld was neither. The promise was real and the screen was genuinely impressive. The reality was a machine that was bulkier than anything it competed with, fed by six AA batteries that it ran through at a rate that became the machine’s standing joke.

That trade-off — colour and light versus bulk and batteries — is the gap a modern handheld closes. The devices below keep everything the Game Gear promised and drop everything it cost: a backlit IPS screen, a rechargeable battery over USB-C, a body that fits a pocket. The original’s headline weakness simply does not exist in its modern form, and that is the most satisfying kind of upgrade.

The picks in detail

The value pick — BATLEXP G350 (from £94.90, in stock)

If you simply want your Game Gear back — the machine, the screen, the library, without the six batteries — the G350 delivers exactly that, at the lowest price in the range. Its RockChip RK3326 — the entry-level chip in the range — runs the full library at full speed with headroom to spare, exactly as the chips further up the range do. There is nothing the £225 device does on this platform that the £95 device does not. The Game Gear is carried tested and configured on the G350’s replacement dArkOS firmware, and its near-square picture fills the height of the 3.5″ 4:3 panel with slim bars either side — on the same 228 PPI screen as the RG353V and RG353M, the sharpest 4:3 pixel density in the range. What the lower price buys out of is everything past the 8-bit era: the RK3326 is a 2D-first chip, excellent through the Game Boy, the SNES, the Mega Drive and the Master System, good for the PS1, and honest about where it stops. For the Game Gear specifically it is the equal of anything here, at less than half the price of the most expensive device in the range — and it is the best-stocked device I sell, in stock across every colour.

The best-built 4:3 device — Anbernic RG405M (£224.90, the final unit)

If you want the best-built 4:3 device in the range and the headroom to reach far past the 8-bit era, this is the pick — and it needs saying plainly that this is the last one. A single Grey Expanded unit remains at £224.90, and no restock is planned. The RG405M has a 4.0″ 4:3 IPS panel that shows the Game Gear’s near-square picture with the same slim side bars, an aluminium body and Hall Effect sticks that give it a substantial, gamepad-like feel, and a UNISOC T618 chip that treats the platform as a warm-up — the same chip reaches PS1, Dreamcast, N64 and the PSP. The Game Gear will never stretch it, and that is the point of the headroom: it buys performance everywhere else in the library.

The clamshell — Anbernic RG DS (from £144.90, in stock)

The RG DS lists the Game Gear among its platforms configured out of the box, running full speed on its RockChip RK3568 chip and the 4.0″ 4:3 top screen. It is one of the two devices I am keeping in stock — alongside the BATLEXP G350 — while the RG405M sells through and the RG353V and RG353M run down their final units, and the clamshell form is a genuinely good home for handheld-native games: it closes over its own screen and slips into a bag. The honest caveat is the one this series has given before: the RG DS exists for the Nintendo DS, and its second screen and touch hardware go unused by an 8-bit-era handheld. If dual-screen gaming is a draw alongside Sega’s, the RG DS does both well; if the Game Gear is your only priority, the same money goes further elsewhere.

Final-stock sharp-screen options — Anbernic RG353V and RG353M

The RG353V (from £149.90) and its metal-bodied sibling the RG353M (£184.90) share the same RockChip RK3566 chip and — worth saying plainly — the same 3.5″ 4:3 panel as the G350: 640×480, 228 PPI, the sharpest 4:3 pixel density in the range. On that panel the Game Gear’s 10:9 picture behaves exactly as it does on the G350’s identical screen: full height, slim bars either side. Both devices ship dual-boot — ArkOS on Linux and GammaOS-RK3566 on Android — each with its own configured library. The difference between the two is build, not screen: the RG353V is a lightweight vertical pocket device, the RG353M a heavier horizontal aluminium body with drift-resistant Hall Effect sticks. There is an honest aside worth making about the RG353V: its vertical body echoes the shape of the monochrome handhelds the Game Gear competed against in 1991 — this time with the colour screen and the battery life. I should be straight that both are final stock — I am not restocking either. The RG353V has four single units across its variations; the RG353M is down to two.

What about the widescreen devices?

The Game Gear’s near-square picture cannot fill a 16:9 frame without stretching, so the widescreen devices draw the heaviest black borders in this series — the same reason they were wrong for the Mega Drive and the Master System, and more so, and the opposite reason widescreen suited the PSP.

The PowKiddy RGB10 Max 2 (£159.90) lists the Game Gear among its supported handheld platforms and runs it at full speed on the same RockChip RK3326 chip as the G350 — identical performance, in fact. Its 5.0″ 16:9 panel is comfortable and its ergonomic grip is genuinely good, but a near-square picture puts all that width to work on black bars. It is down to a single Ice Special Edition unit, and its RetroOZ firmware is its real strength rather than its fit for a 10:9 platform.

The Retroid Pocket 3 Plus, which appeared in earlier articles in this series, has since sold through — it was final stock, and it is gone. Its 16:9 panel would have been the wrong shape for the Game Gear anyway; the PSP is the platform to remember it by.

How to choose

  • You want your Game Gear back for as little as possible: G350. Full-speed Game Gear tested and configured on dArkOS at £94.90, on the sharp 228 PPI panel — and the best-stocked device I sell.
  • You want the best-built 4:3 device and the headroom for more: RG405M. Aluminium body, Hall Effect sticks, a T618 chip with reach far past the 8-bit era — but it is the final unit, so if it appeals, it is worth acting quickly.
  • The Nintendo DS is a draw alongside Sega’s handheld: RG DS. Game Gear configured out of the box, dual-screen and touch for the DS, and one of the two devices I am keeping in stock.
  • You want a metal body or a vertical pocket shape: RG353M (metal, two units) or RG353V (vertical pocket). The same sharp 228 PPI panel as the G350, plus multi-touch and dual-boot firmware — final stock, while it lasts.
  • You are drawn to the RGB10 Max 2: it runs the Game Gear at full speed, but its 16:9 panel shows the heaviest borders in the range and it is down to a single unit — buy it for its grip and firmware, not for this platform.

Why a configured handheld plays the Game Gear better than a factory one
