What actually makes a good Neo Geo handheld

The Neo Geo occupies a category of its own in retro gaming. It was arcade hardware sold as a home console — SNK put the same board that ran its arcade cabinets into a living-room machine, charged a price to match, and sold its cartridges at figures that made it the most expensive way to play of its era. That is precisely its appeal today: the Neo Geo library is arcade gaming, with the graphics, the pacing and the coin-fed difficulty of the cabinet, and a handheld that runs it well puts that arcade experience in your pocket for less than one of its cartridges cost new.

On the power question, the Neo Geo is undemanding in a way that surprises people. The board’s main processor is a Motorola 68000 — the same processor class as the Sega Mega Drive — driving fixed, unchanging hardware. Every chip I sell, from the entry-level RockChip RK3326 in the BATLEXP G350 to the UNISOC T618 in the RG405M and the Retroid Pocket 3 Plus, runs the full Neo Geo library at full speed. As with the Mega Drive, you cannot buy a device here that runs the Neo Geo badly, and you cannot pay extra for one that runs it better.

So the decision comes down to the screen and the controls — and on the Neo Geo, both are more interesting than they sound.

The screen: the Neo Geo’s arcade picture is near-4:3, and it maps onto these panels almost perfectly. The board draws its picture at 320×224 — a touch wider than a 4:3 television’s frame, and drawn for arcade monitors rather than living rooms. That makes the 4:3 panels in the range the natural home for it: at double resolution, the 320×224 picture fills the full 640-pixel width of a 640×480 panel exactly, with at most narrow letterbox bars above and below. The arcade artwork sits large and sharp on the panel. The two widescreen devices — the Retroid Pocket 3 Plus (4.7″, 16:9) and the PowKiddy RGB10 Max 2 (5.0″, 16:9) — pillarbox instead, drawing black bars to the left and right of the picture to pad their wider frames. In the PSP article those 16:9 panels were the correct fit; on the Neo Geo they are the wrong one, for the same reason they were wrong for the Mega Drive.

The controls: an arcade joystick game played on a modern gamepad — configured so it works. The original Neo Geo controller put its four buttons — A, B, C, D — in a single row under a joystick. Every handheld here instead carries four face buttons in the diamond layout that has been the convention since the SNES, and the four Neo Geo inputs land directly on those four buttons — no shoulder-button juggling like the six-button Mega Drive. What the original had that a gamepad does not is the stick, and that is where the configuration matters: every device I sell has twin-analogue sticks, and on every one of them I configure the arcade emulator so the left stick stands in for the directional pad — the closest a handheld gets to that arcade joystick feel. The coin slot is handled the same way: Select is mapped to insert coin on every device, so adding a credit mid-game is a single press.

Power, as on the Mega Drive, is not a decision at all. The differentiator here is quality of panel, quality of body, and how much of the wider retro library you want alongside the arcade — and that is where the real differences between these devices live.

If you want the best-built 4:3 device in the range and the headroom to reach well past the arcade, this is the pick. The RG405M has a 4.0″ 4:3 IPS panel that carries the Neo Geo’s picture at full size and sharpness, and its UNISOC T618 chip runs the full library at full speed — comfortably, for a chip that also reaches the Dreamcast, the N64 and the PSP. The aluminium body and the Hall Effect sticks give it a substantial, gamepad-like feel that suits arcade play, the four face buttons cover the A/B/C/D layout directly, and insert coin sits on Select. If the Neo Geo is one system among many and you want the premium experience across all of them, this is the device.

I will be straight that I am selling the last of these with no restock planned. The T618 reaches a long way past the Neo Geo — into PS1 with double-resolution rendering, Dreamcast, the N64 and the PSP — so the headroom is real if the arcade is your starting point rather than your endpoint.

This is the value pick, and on the Neo Geo the argument is unusually clean. The platform is a fixed-specification arcade board that every chip here clears comfortably — so the G350’s RockChip RK3326 runs the full Neo Geo library at full speed, exactly as the RG405M’s T618 does, and there is nothing on this platform that the £225 device does that the £95 device does not. Its 3.5″ 4:3 panel is the sharpest 4:3 screen in the range at 228 PPI — the same panel as the pricier RG353V and RG353M — and the arcade picture sits on it just as cleanly. The arcade emulator is set up as it is on every device I sell — left stick standing in for the directional pad, Select mapped to insert coin — and on the G350, turbo fire is enabled for the shooters and fighters.

What the lower price buys out of is everything that is not the Neo Geo. The RK3326 is a 2D-first chip — excellent for the Game Boy, the SNES, the Mega Drive and the arcade, good for the PS1, and honest about where it stops. If your interest is 2D gaming rather than 3D consoles, that is not a compromise at all; on the Neo Geo specifically the G350 is the equal of anything here, at less than half the price of the most expensive device in the range.

The RG DS runs the Neo Geo through FinalBurn Neo — the reference emulator for this platform — on its RockChip RK3568 chip, at full speed, on a 4.0″ 4:3 top screen that carries the arcade picture at full size. It is one of the two devices I am keeping in stock — alongside the BATLEXP G350 — while the RG405M sells through and the RG353V and RG353M are final stock. The honest caveat is that the RG DS exists for the Nintendo DS: its second screen and its touch hardware are there for dual-screen games, and the Neo Geo makes no use of them. If the DS is a draw for you alongside the arcade — the DS article covers why that pairing works — the RG DS does both well and is one I am keeping in stock; if the Neo Geo is your only priority, the same money goes further elsewhere.

Final-stock sharp-screen options — Anbernic RG353V and RG353M

The RG353V (from £149.90) and its metal-bodied sibling the RG353M (from £184.90) share the same RockChip RK3566 chip and — worth saying plainly — the same 3.5″ 4:3 panel as the G350: 640×480, 228 PPI — the sharpest 4:3 panel in the range. On the Neo Geo that panel is a genuine strength: the arcade artwork renders crisply at double resolution, and the RK3566 runs the full library at full speed with room to spare. Both devices ship dual-boot — ArkOS on Linux and GammaOS-RK3566 on Android — each with its own configured library.

The difference between the two is build, not screen or performance: the RG353V is a lightweight vertical pocket device, the RG353M a heavier horizontal aluminium body with drift-resistant Hall Effect sticks. I should be straight that both are final stock — I am not restocking either. The RG353V still has a few variations available; the RG353M is down to a single unit at the Expanded 128GB tier, so if that metal body appeals, it is worth acting quickly.

What about the widescreen devices?

The two 16:9 devices in the range — the Retroid Pocket 3 Plus and the PowKiddy RGB10 Max 2 — both run the Neo Geo at full speed, and both pillarbox it. The Neo Geo’s near-4:3 picture cannot fill a 16:9 frame without stretching, so black bars sit to the left and right of the image — the wrong shape of screen for this platform, as it was for the Mega Drive and the GBA, and for the opposite reason it was right for the PSP.

The Retroid Pocket 3 Plus (£239.90) is final stock — once it is gone, it is gone — and I am down to a single unit. Its UNISOC T618 chip and its 4.7″ 1334×750 panel are superb — the best screen and the best PSP experience in the range — but for the Neo Geo specifically the widescreen shape works against it.

The PowKiddy RGB10 Max 2 (£159.90) has a comfortable 5.0″ 16:9 panel and the same RockChip RK3326 chip as the G350, so the Neo Geo performance is identical — but it pillarboxes the near-4:3 image the same way, and it is down to a single Ice Special Edition unit. Its real strengths are its ergonomic grip and its RetroOZ firmware rather than its fit for the arcade; for the Neo Geo, the 4:3 devices above are the better match.

How to choose

  • You want the best-built 4:3 device and the headroom for more: RG405M. The aluminium body, the 4.0″ 4:3 panel, arcade conventions on the buttons — the premium arcade experience, in stock but selling through.
  • You are buying for the Neo Geo and you want to spend less: G350. Full-speed Neo Geo at £94.90 on the sharpest 4:3 panel in the range — the device that proves power is not the story on this platform. In stock.
  • The Nintendo DS is a draw alongside the arcade: RG DS. Full-speed Neo Geo via FinalBurn Neo on a 4.0″ 4:3 top screen, dual-screen and touch for the DS, and one of the two devices I am keeping in stock.
  • You want a metal body or a sharp vertical pocket device: RG353M (metal, single unit) or RG353V (vertical pocket). The same sharp 228 PPI panel as the G350, plus multi-touch and dual-boot firmware — final stock, while it lasts.
  • You are drawn to the Retroid Pocket 3 Plus or the RGB10 Max 2: both run the Neo Geo at full speed, but both pillarbox the near-4:3 picture on their 16:9 panels — buy them for the PSP, not for the arcade.

Why a configured handheld plays the Neo Geo better than a factory one

Arcade emulation is where configuration shows up most, because arcade games were never designed for a gamepad. Every device on this page runs a replacement firmware rather than the stock operating system it ships with — dArkOS on the G350, GammaOS Lite on the RG405M, GammaOS Next on the RG DS, dual-boot ArkOS and GammaOS-RK3566 on the RG353V and RG353M, RetroOZ on the RGB10 Max 2, and the Daijishou frontend in place of Retroid’s own launcher on the Retroid Pocket 3 Plus. The Neo Geo runs through mature, full-speed emulation on each of them, and the work shows in the places a factory device gets wrong: the correct BIOS present and placed, the arcade conventions mapped to buttons, the controls configured so a gamepad plays games that expected a joystick and a coin slot, and each platform tuned and tested rather than left at the defaults a direct import arrives with.
